the food of spain
the food of spain by claudia roden, absolutely one of our favourite spanish cookbooks. claudia roden has spent five years travelling, researching and writing about the food of spain, resulting in this definitive, passionate and evocative cookbook which takes in the different regions and looks at the history, the people and the culture at the heart of this country, and at that which binds it all together - the delicious food and recipes passed down through generations. from simple delicateley flavoured soups, to elaborate celebratory dishes served on silver platters and cakes and desserts each with a story to tell. this is the book about spain to learn from and to cook from.

fresh green beans with creamy burrata
this dish is based on a recipe from sharing puglia, burrata e fagiolini, a salad of green beans and burrata, served with figs and a dressing of olive oil and basil. burrata is a delicious cheese with a fanatastic creamy, silky texture. since it's too early in season, for figs, i served it with fresh tomatoes instead. image: hans zeegers via taverne agency, recipe after the break.

after 10 years of urban life in san francisco this norwegian family found a plot in the woods, some 40 km west of oslo in norway. here they enjoy the best of both possible worlds; easy access to the capital oslo and complete withdrawal into the wild. they bought an old timberhouse, took it down and moved the timber with two large trucks from its location in the mountain to their plot in the woods and designed and build a house with it. images: dreyer hensley via taverne agency

grilled sardines, preferably caught and eaten immediately…..
but not always possible obviously, how ever, try to buy them as fresh as possible. simply sprinkle the sardines with salt & pepper, grill them on the barbecue until golden, drizzle with lemon juice and serve with extra lemon wedges, a green salad, crusty bread and chilled white wine. summerrrrrrr…. image: dana van leeuwen via taverne agency, recipe (or 'cooking directions'): leonoor ottink

in the small fisherman's village of churchhaven tucked away in a nature reserve on south africa's unspoilt west coast, honest simplicity, tranquility and wide open spaces soothe the soul. this is a place where time stands still and the heart is at peace. beautiful images: robbert koene and liezel norval-kruger via taverne agency. click on read more to see more.
