our greatest culinary hero and widely admired cookbook writer claudia roden receives dutch award 'johannes van damprijs' for all her works. she is not just a fantastic cook, she is also a great writer. she writes as a culinary anthropologist, always includes ethnography and history of the kitchen and table, she traces the origin of each recipe and tells background stories of the food.

andrée putman died a last week aged 87. she was credited with inventing the concept of 'boutique hotel' with her game-changing interior design of the morgan's hotel on new york's madison avenue in 1984. she put on her stamp on hotels in germany, france, japan and hongkong, where luxury skyscraper apartment-hotel 'the putman' was named after her.

the andaz hotel in amsterdam, opening november 2012, is part of the hyatt group and the first hotel which marcel wanders has design totally. the hotel is filled with his design, from specially designed wallpaper to the napkins. the hotel is situated on the prinsengracht, one the the main canals of amsterdam, and contains a big walled garden with a huge wall painting by himself, spa, gym, 122 rooms and 5 suites. photos: herman van heusden
